21 Jun 06 - Race Kit Update.
Regrettably our supplier for RAF Race Kit has not been able
to get our order ready in time for the Dambuster race on 24
June 06. I have been reliably informed that the kit should
be ready for dispatch to me by the 30 June, after which I
will forward it on to those that have placed orders. I appreciate
that this is far from satisfactory and another disappointment.
Rest assured that I I have been working with the Committee
to come up with a longer term plan which will prevent the
problem recurring year on year.
Running Jackets (message board serial 227) - only 9 members
expressed an interest in buying a running jacket, which is
unfortunately not enough to go ahead with.
Please note that my email address has been changed and the
kit (at) raftri.org.uk link has been updated in case some
of you have emailed me direct using my old work email. Please
retry using the raftri address if you wish to contact me.

19 Jun 06 - Inter Services Triathlon.
If you've had a look at the Navy's Op Order for the IS Triathlon
at Sherborne, you'll have noticed that the race registration
is at 0700-0800 with the race starting at 0900, so it's an
early start this year. Although the teams will not be selected
until after the Dambuster (formal letter to follow), in order
to allow a bit of early planning for those who plan to be
there as team members or guests, here's some heads up info.
All team members, once selected, are to meet on the Tuesday
evening at Blandford Camp at around 1830, where we'll be accommodated
for the night - sorry none available nearer Sherborne. We'll
then go into the town for a meal, which once again will be
heavily, if not totally, subsidised by RAF Tri. Breakfast
has been arranged for 0545, which will give plenty of time
to get over to Sherborne (just over 20 miles) by just gone
0700. Keep your eye on the website for the formal IS letter.
16 Jun 06 - RAFTri Deputy Treasurer.
Our Treasurer will be sent on a 'holiday' at Her Majesty's
service (Saudi I think) from Sep 06 - Jan 07. Therefore we
must have a deputy treasurer to manage our funds while he
is away. The deputy would have to receive a hand-over from
Dave and be in 'the chair' by end of Jul 06. This is an urgent
request to see if anyone in the Association may be interested.
This is a good chance for someone to grab a high profile secondary
duty. If nobody volunteers, one of the present committee will
have to doubly up; with our Chairman also being out of area,
it is very important that we maintain our structure over the
second half of the year.

16 Jun 06 - Sports Lottery Membership.
According to the RAF Sports Lottery/Board, recent redundancies
and PVRs have reduced the number of individuals who participate
in the RAF Sports Lottery. The lottery is our prime source
of funding and to maintain our income we need to encourage
people to be members.
It is in the best interest of all association members to
join the RAF Sports Lottery. People can have more than 1 ticket
and individuals attending tours must be in the Lottery to
receive funding. Funding benefits everyone in the long run,
and the prizes are also quite good. If you don't have tickets,
then please think about getting some.
9 Jun 06 - Tour Interest: IM Nice,
Jun 07. At the last committee meeting we agreed
that there would be 2 tours per year. This was because of
the limitations placed on all RAF tours by the IS Sports Board.
We also agreed that one of the 07 tours would be linked to
competing in IM Nice, scheduled for end Jun 07.
Entries for the 07 event will open on 26 Jun 06. Anyone who
would like to be considered for the tour next year will have
to enter. Cost is likely to be 320 Euros.
We appreciate it is alot to ask people to pay an entry for
an IM while we are only just getting into the 2006 season,
but unfortunately interest needs to be registered this early.
Thanks, Mark Saggers
3 Jun 06 - Lincolnshire Championships.
Good news for RAF Tri member Lucy Nell, since after some deliberation
East Midlands Region of BTA have re-awarded places in the
Lincolnshire Championships. From her performance at Woodhall
Spa on 28 May, Lucy earned the title of female Lincolnshire
County Champion. No doubt the opinion of Michael Nell will
be echoed by the association... "Bomber County Championship
goes to an RAF Tri member - that's a result!" Congratulations
Lucy.
31 May 06 - Cycling and Multi-Sport
Training, Pyrenees: My partner and I are long
standing athletes in running, cycling and triathlon. We have
started a training and cycling guest house in the Pyrenees
mountains for cyclists and multi-sport athletes. We are called
Velo Pyrenees and you can view our website at www.velopyrenees.com
for more information.
This is our first year and we are trying to reach all cyclists
and triathletes out there and was wondering if you could help
us by sharing the attached Tour
de France promotion between your club members.
Many thanks in advance,
Lee and Julie.
8 May 06 - Flying the Flag: Racing
News from the Gulf: Currently deployed OOA
to AL Udeid with Sqn. Taken part in a few events thought you
might like to know about.
Aquathon: Racing early in the moring isn't
fun especially when the temp is already passing 25 and don't
look like stopping just yet. Sole British competitor at the
start line which was mostly dominated by Americans and Australians.
Strong 800m swim (11:15) leaving me in second place. Took
lead in transition and headed out on 5Km Run. Passed by American
midway through first lap. Maintained strong pace but was unable
to catch leading American. Just managed to cross line seconds
ahead of fastly advancing pack lead by Australian Ironman
in a total time 31:45.
Swimming: Taken part in a few freestyle
events. Continued Home nations strangle hold in the pool over
the Australians winning 50m (31:00) 100m (67:10) and 400m
(5:07:10). Not much really but something at least. All in
prep for next months races at Odiham (Subject to 2 Group getting
us back on time), Dambuster and Ironman Uk in August. No photos
from events, I've included lanzarote pic from last year.

2 May 06 - BTA National Team Relays
Championships, John Crewe: The BTA National
Team Relays are taking place at the National Watersports Centre
in Nottingham on Saturday 5 Aug 06. It's a well established
annual event and is an excellent day out with the emphasis
as much on fun as on racing, with up to 400 teams taking part.
The format is each person in the 4 man team swims 500m (open
water), then each person bikes 15 km and finally each person
runs 5 km. That means you get a good break between each part
of the race. It's all on closed roads and there's a great
view of the action from the stands. Last year the RAF entered
2 teams - this year we are going for 5 teams, 4 male and 1
female. It won't cost you a penny to enter and you get travel
expenses refunded (presuming JPA has got it's act together
by then!). Get the date into your diaries now and to register
your interest, contact John Crewe on 95771 8056/email on astoript-occlspmt(at)waddington.raf.mod.uk
or johncrewe(at)raftri.org.uk
Thanks
John [WM: It is a great event, and a fun day out]
21 Apr 06 - Tour Planning 2007 &
2008, Pete Daulby: Every year, the RAF Sports
Lottery partially support RAF Sports Teams to compete abroad.
For the last 3 years the RAF Team has competed at La Santa
at the beginning of each season. It has been proposed that
from 2007 there will be 2 RAF Triathlon Tours per year. Within
Royal Air Force Triathlon we compete at 3 distances. It would
be unpractical to have 3 tours per year to compete abroad
at every distance (Sprint, Standard, Middle/Long). Therefore
it has been decided that there will be a Sprint Distance Tour
at the beginning of every year; this will generally be La
Santa. There will then be a 2nd tour later in the year which
will alternate between Long/Middle Distance (Ironman) and
Olympic Distance. Personnel will not be able to apply to go
on 2 tours in any one year and all attendees must be members
of the RAF Sports Lottery to attract Lottery funding. Each
tour will have places for a men’s team of 12 and a ladies’
team of 6. The tours for 2007-2008, subject to RAF Sports
Board approval, will be as follows:
2007
Mar 07 – Sprint Distance Tour to La Santa, Lanzarote
- interested parties can contact Mark on sec(at)raftri.org.uk
Jun 07 – Ironman France, Nice, - interested parties
can contact chairman(at)raftri.org.uk
2008
Mar 08 – Sprint Distance Tour to La Santa, Lanzarote.
Names will be taken from Apr 07
Oct 08 – Standard Distance Triathlon in Australia.
Names will be taken from Dec 07.
Now, if that is not forward planning, I don’t know
what is! It is expected that the men’s teams will be
over subscribed. However, we are always short of ladies to
fill the female slots.
6 Apr 06 - Inter Services Duathlon:
A big thank you to all those who took part in the Inter-Service
Duathlon Championships at St Athan on Wednesday. On a bright
sunny day, predictably the Army took the honours in the mens'
and ladies' team events. The RAF mens came third with the
ladies team coming in 2nd. Our top 3 chance in the men's event,
Greg McDonald, had an unfortunate exit from the race in T1
after the structural integrity of his seatpost was brought
into question when it disintegrated. In the ladies' event,
well done to Vicky Webb, who came in 2nd after leading into
the final run and Sally John, who came third. All in all it
was a great effort from all the RAF athletes with over 20
racing on the day, many of those racing in a duathlon for
the first time. Results will follow.
